2013 Sewing Educators Yearbook
Sewing Knowledge: It's Meant to Be Shared

Professional sewing educators travel throughout the world in order to spread the word on sewing. They have written books, spoken at seminars, and answered sewing-related questions over and over again. They continue to instruct more classes, write more books and articles, and attend more shows so they can help you, as an independent sewing dealer, excite your customers and increase sales through seminars, workshops, and classes.
When you invite a sewing educator to visit your store and present a workshop or class, you are taking advantage of an excellent opportunity to generate publicity, goodwill, and best of all, product sales. You are also establishing yourself within your community as an authority in your field. When students can attend classes at your store and conquer their fears of new or unfamiliar sewing skills, they are able to plan future projects and carry them through to success. This creates a need for products and materials and results in repeat sales for you.
Guest speakers can turn classes at your store into exciting and profitable events. Invite a sewing professional into your store and get ready to inspire your customers and move your products.

Barbara has been sewing since she was able to reach the foot pedal. Growing up in a family of modest means, if she wanted a "wardrobe", she had to create it. She made all her clothes in high school, including her prom dresses and winter coats. In later years, during her stay at home time with two children, she continued to make custom slip covers, drapes, and children's clothing for herself and neighbors. Moving back into the business world for many years, time was at a minimum and her interests turned to "embellishment" of readymade clothing. Quick and easy but still a dramatic flair. Her first embroidery machine was a Brother 7500 purchased in 1993 and her love for embroidery and Brother machines began. Being involved in several high school, college and volunteer organizations, embroidery quickly consumed all her free time. So when the opportunity with Brother presented itself to turn her love for sewing and embroidery into her career, she jumped at the chance. She has never looked back, for over 10 years she has enjoyed a rewarding career with Brother.

Her book Your Shape, Your Clothes and You – Secrets of a Successful Wardrobe teaches women how to dress based on their triangle, square, circle or oval body shape. Her unique concept fostered the development of a line of basic patterns for each of the shapes. These patterns eliminate time-consuming fittings to create garments that fit perfectly. Recently she has adapted quilting techniques for her patterns so wearable art looks fabulous and it fits. See her article in the September 2009 issue of SQE Professional.

Karen Zimmerman started her sewing journey as a preteen. She promised herself that she would never sew like her mother, however, she was 5'8, 12 years old and it wasn't cool to wear pants that were too short. For such a fashion infraction, she felt she could have been arrested by the fashion police. So she started sewing and found that she absolutely loved it. While attending college, she and one of her closest friends shared a great passion for sewing. They challenged each other constantly with creative projects. Since that time Karen has designed a clothing line for children, paraments, vestments, and garments for the "classic woman." Today she enjoys even more areas of sewing, including home dec, gifts, embroidery and quilting. Karen is active in the American Sewing Guild, Atlanta Chapter.
